LeaseSet data is no longer added to every end-to-end message,
reducing protocol overhead.
Unreachable peers are avoided as inbound tunnel gateways,

The 0.6.5 release introduces new components,
drops some old ones (like the old TCP transport)
and has been optimized to perform better.
The BOB (Basic Open Bridge) protocol is introduced,
for use by client applications which cannot import
I2CP libraries directly. This deprecates the old
SAM protocol which was previously used in such cases.
For now however, BOB is not started automatically yet on
new installations, and SAM remains active on old installations.
Improved code should be better at preventing congestion
by probabalistically dropping participating traffic,
and likewise behave better when congestion occurs.
The floodfill NetDB should operate more reliably,
the streaming library should choose better message sizes,
offer a socket timeout function, and work proceeds

The 0.7 release adds stability and flexibility to I2PSnark,
which can hopefully be used to distribute I2P updates in future.
The I2P router gets fixes and optimizations to various
transport-level and streaming issues, network exploration,
NetDB performance and the UDP introducer system. Among other features,
the new release offers better connection limiting, higher tolerance
to "out of memory" exceptions in helper applications, and an
experimental new address system using Base32 hashes
of destination keys (".b32.i2p" URLs).
Both the BOB and SAM protocols are improved upon,
more old components dropped, Router Console features added
and a possible latency measurement attack mitigated.
- From this release onwards, block lists for misbehaving peers
are activated by default.

The 0.7.1 release optimizes I2P towards better performance
and introduces new features.
Multiple bugs are fixed, replacements to the SimpleTimer class
should waste less time on object locking. Some old components
are dropped and several classes refactored to avoid repeating code.
Support for encrypted LeaseSets (for creation of links over I2P
which an adversary cannot obstruct by attacking its gateways)
becomes more complete. New tunnel types like IRC server tunnels
and new options like delayed start and idling of tunnels
also gain support, along with improved usability of the I2P
Socks proxy mechanism.

in I2P, while preparing ground for new functionality.
Threading issues with the SimpleTimer class should no longer occur,

and "abandoned" tunnels should finish operation correctly.
Support is added for accessing the Router Console over IPv6,
a new message type enables I2CP applications to query
the router's bandwidth limits, an experimental desktop interface

in too many tunnels is prevented to improve reliability and safety.
Besides other maintenance work, several old statistics calculators
are dropped to make router profiles smaller and quicker, while

A patch to I2P's internal web server Jetty is included
to correct SusiDNS behaviour on Windows. The way I2P nodes
volunteer to participate in the Network Database is changed
to avoid too many doing this simultaneously, and creation
of new participating tunnels is now throttled before messages
in existing tunnels start to get dropped.
Multiple improvements to the Router Console and other components
are included, I2PSnark can handle bigger torrents and more files,
while work continues on the experimental desktop interface.
Updating is recommended.

I2P version 0.7.5 foremost addresses network stability issues
by adjusting how exploratory tunnels are built if a router nears
its connection limit, and also by distinguishing between
connected peers and other non-failing peers while picking them
for inclusion in tunnels.
This version also delivers fixes to installer behaviour on Windows,
to the Router Console, NTCP transport and UPnP mechanism.
Additionally, version 0.7.5 changes the "news.xml" file location
where I2P routers check whether a new version is available.
Instead of the old URL (http://complication.i2p/news.xml)
a new location (http://echelon.i2p/i2p/news.xml) will be used.
If your router uses default updater settings, it will start using
the new URL automatically. If not, you will need to visit
"configupdate.jsp" on the Router Console, and change it manually.
For a while after this update, the old news.xml location
also redirects all HTTP requests to the new one.
This is because I need to withdraw from the I2P projest.
The reasons for my withdrawal have nothing to do with I2P,
and I wish the very best to you all. Oppositely,
the reasons have everything to do with my "real-life"
identity, events which I could not foresee (neither good
nor bad, but unavoidable) and my plans for future.
This update removes my public key from the list of trusted
release signing keys, and the next release will be signed
by zzz instead. If you have non-default updater settings
in force, you may want to remove my key manually.
This is easily accomplished by visiting "configupdate.jsp"
on the Router Console, and removing the key line
starting with the characters "JHFA".

In early 2009, shortly after our attendance at 25C3, we released version 0.7 of the I2P Anonymous Network.
Over the next 15 releases in 18 months we have worked to improve the usability of the I2P software
and increase its performance, security, and reliability - all while dealing with unprecedented growth in the network.
</p><p>
In recognition of these accomplishments, we are declaring the start of the 0.8 series.
The 0.8 release is fully compatible with all 0.7.x releases. This release contains several bugfixes,
a new Dutch translation, and completion of the German translation. As always, users are encouraged to upgrade.

Some visible highlights of the 0.7.x release series in the last year and a half:

Automatically generated Base32 destination names, reducing reliance on host names.

Themable router console with GeoIP display.

<li>
Multi-layered system of limiting connections to peers.

New, smaller tunnel build message to reduce the chance it will be dropped, and increase build success rates.

Transition to Java 5 concurrent data structures for a significant reduction in lock contention.

Transition to Java 5 coding styles, a significant increase in javadoc documentation, and elimination of unused code for maintanability.

Split directory structure for ease of use on multi-user systems and easier packaging.

Clock skew system redesign, with implementation of NTP-style clock adjustment.

Adjustment of several parameters based on the speed and maximum memory of the router, to optimize speed and memory usage.

An uncountable number of bugfixes and improvements that enhance security, anonymity, reliability, performance, scalability, and the user experience.

In <a href="http://www.gulli.com/news/i2p-an-anonymous-network-2009-03-09/">zzz's interview with gulli.com last year</a>,
he said that "privacy is under severe and increasing threat throughout the world".
It is clear that this trend is accelerating both in "oppressed" nations and those that are nominally "free".
As we prepare to attend <a href="http://thenexthope.org/">the HOPE conference in New York</a>, with many talks on privacy,
we'll be working on plans to continue improving I2P and spreading the word.

<p>I2P release 0.8.7 contains several upgrades to long-neglected components,
including the Naming Services, graphing, the native CPU ID and BigInteger
libraries, crypto implementations, and the wrapper.</p>
<p>Thanks to new contributor KillYourTV who was instrumental in implementing
and testing these upgrades, with additional support from sponge and hottuna.</p>
<p>CPU ID enhancements are by hottuna, generously funded by
<a href="http://relakks.com/">http://relakks.com/</a> and <a href="http://ipredator.se/">http://ipredator.se/</a> -
thanks to Peter Sunde and Jan-Erik Fiske for their support.</p>
<p>Also, for the first time, we now have an official
<a href="https://launchpad.net/~i2p-maintainers/+archive/i2p">I2P Personal Package Archive (PPA) on launchpad.net</a>.
For those of you using Ubuntu, this offers an easy way to install I2P and keep the
various components up-to-date. The I2P package offers the option of installing as
a service, or it may be started on-demand as usual. This PPA is currently maintained
by KillYourTV with support by other members of the development team.

support for these systems before.

<p>* The Wrapper was updated to version 3.5.9 and the libraries are now PIC compliant, and support 64-bit on
most architectures. For those who did not have a working wrapper before (those on grsec / ASLR kernels, or
freebsd, ARM ,or x86 OS X) manual upgrade of your wrapper libraries is possible. Instructions at

<p>I'm happy to announce that itoopie and I2PControl are available publicly.</p>
<p>itoopie is a graphical interface intended as a compliment to the I2P Router Console.
The aim of itoopie is to provide an interface that is simpler and has a lower lurning curve than the I2P Router Console.</p>
<p>I2PControl is an I2P plugin providing a JSONRPC interface for the I2P router. The interface supports setting basic settings (bandwidth, ports etc.), reading many stats and is provided over an SSL encrypted HTTP connection.</p>

As you all have noticed, the unprecedented network growth starting October 5th
has dramatically increased network congestion, especially on evenings (UTC)
and weekends. The last two releases contained a few changes that we hoped
would relieve the pressure, but unfortunately these measures have been only
modest successes. The primary issue is to limit the number of direct router
to-router connections in the network. This isn't a new problem; we've been
working on it for several years, with good results. However, the recent
growth pushed us over the edge once again.
</p><p>
Release 0.8.11 includes several more changes to reduce the number of router-to-router
connections and increase connection and tunnel build capacity. The goal, of course,
is to improve tunnel build success rates and general reliability. As always, there's
a few bug fixes and translation updates.
</p><p>
We welcome all our new users. Please be patient as we work to improve network
performance. Debugging congestion problems in a distributed anonymous network
is a continuing challenge. Please help improve the network
by restarting your router once the upgrade is downloaded.

The 0.8.12 release fixes several message corruption bugs, some present since 2005.
It also contains a redesign of the router's congestion control, and continued optimization
of CPU and memory usage. We are hopeful that these changes will improve network performance.

<p><strong>Release Details</strong></p>
<p>This release contains several big changes that should help network reliability and performance.</p>
<p>The first two changes are fixes for major UDP packet transmission bugs, described below. The third change
is fixes to the decompressor. Fixing these should eliminate a big source of message delivery failures.</p>
<p>Also, the release contains a rewrite of the router's participating traffic congestion control. It should
now more accurately measure current participating bandwidth, handle bursts better, drop messages less, and
drop the right messages if dropping is required.</p>
<p>Also, the release reduces the amount of processing that routers do for messages they pass down the tunnel.
These messages do not need to be completely parsed and validated since the gateway is simply passing them through.
This will help performance of all routers but the improvement will probably not be noticeable except on high-traffic routers.</p>
<p>We're optimistic that these changes will help, and of course eliminating sources of message corruption is sure to help.
However the extend of the improvement won't be apparent until the majority of the network upgrades.</p>
<p>The release also contains some updates to the router console light theme. You may need to do a shift-reload
or control-reload in your browser to force a reload of the CSS.</p>
<p><strong>Major changes</strong></p>
<p>- Instead of fully parsing and validating messages received at the inbound gateway, simply pass them down the tunnel
<br />- Don't verify I2NP checksums in most cases, as message corruption is caught at other layers
<br />- Don't recalculate I2NP checksums on messages passed through unchanged
<br />- Several NTCP pumper optimizations, to hopefully fix NTCP pumper high CPU usage on fast routers
<br />- Rewrite participating tunnel congestion control, to drop less, more accurately measure traffic, and handle bursts better</p>
<p><strong>Wrapper Update</strong></p>
<p>New installs include wrapper version 3.5.13 which fixes a heap corruption with very long log lines.

<p><strong>Bug Fixes</strong></p>
<p>- Fix major SSU MTU bug introduced in 0.8.9.The router sometimes sent UDP packets that exceeded the maximum
size that routers would accept on the receive side. This resulted in a lot of dropped packets, tunnel build problems,
and connection problems. One thing that contributed to us missing the problem was that 0.8.9 was released in the
middle of the huge network expansion in early October, when network performance was already deteriorating rapidly.
<br />- Fix major SSU fragmentation bug present since 2005. UDP corrupted transmit messages when the message size
was an exact multiple of the fragmentation size.
<br />- Fix major decompression bugs present since 2005 that caused message corruption and data loss at multiple protocol layers.
<br />- Snark doesn't always delete directories
<br />- Fix all character case conversion (Turkish four i problem)

check for and install plugin updates shortly upon restarting after a router update.
To prevent this, add the advanced configuration
<tt>plugins.autoUpdate=false</tt> before restarting.
There is also a new update-all button on the client configuration page.

Routers in certain countries will now automatically enable hidden mode for increased protection.
However, hidden mode may have lower performance or reliability, and is still a work in progress.

The 0.9 release concludes over a year and a half of work on the 0.8.x series,
in which we greatly improved the performance and security of the router, and the
scalability of the network.

In the 0.9 release we migrate to Jetty 6 for the console and eepsite web server,

This release is network-compatible with prior releases, however see below for important
information on compatibility with existing eepsites, plugins, and webapps.

If you do not use Jetty for your eepsite, the update will not affect it.
